This supply MAY have an overvoltage "crowbar" protection circuit which is set a
little too close to the supplies normal output voltage. If so, find the trip
point by adjusting the output up slightly until it engages. If it's too close,
adjust the crowbar circuit operating point higher. Don't let the output
voltage get above say 15V.
Or the output voltage may have drifted up to where the OVP trips too easily. In
either case, set the output voltage to 13.8 with an accurate dvm.

To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
I have lost my handheld antenna for the second time. I would
like to know which short duck antenna has would perform the best with my
Alinco 580. I have heard that the one Larson makes is pretty good. I
have also heard that the factory supplied antenna is pretty much a dummy
load. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks!

How about non-calls? I believe some states issue sample plates for a
nominal fee. Maybe ham calls are included. Just a thought...

In article <chuck.lampman-220694100419@clampman.gatech.edu>, I wrote to ask
about the possibility of danger from RF from a new neighbor's antenna-
Many thanks to Scott Rosenfeld, Tom Bodoh, Scott Dorsey, Sandy Lynch amd
Gary Coffman, from whom I learned that what I am looking at is a
multi-element beam antenna, probably a "triband yagi", that is pointed
directly away from us most of the time, with a 2 meter vertical on top of
it, and a dipole between the mast and a tree some distance away. I learned
to ask her what frequencies she is operating on, and how much power she is
radiating, and some basic parameters in terms of what's "normal" and what's
possible.
I also learned that not much is known for sure about the dangers of RF, but
that in the typical 3 - 30 mHz ran there seems to be less concern than in
the very high and very low frequency ranges, and that lots of people live
in areas with much higher levels of RF than this antenna will generate.
I also learned that hams seem like a pretty good group of folks- sthanks a
lot for your help!

I would just like to point out that this shows the true spirit of amateur
radio. Rather than a few of those crotchety old-timers whining "don't pick
on us", we have some hams stepping forward with honest facts and trying to
help folks who aren't as familiar with things we play with in our hobby.
Thanks, guys! And Chuck- I missed your original post but I see that you are
at Tech stop on by the shack sometime and who knows, maybe someday soon you
too will be an amateur radio operator! Send e-mail if you are interested...

Have you tried 'gophering' to the University of Illinois weather machine? Its
computer keeps a very impressive archive of the weather maps in the States
(updated every hour or so). The maps are very nice. I have experimented with
many converters / softwares hooked up to my ham radio in the shack, but I
must admit that the UofI's maps are far superior because they don't contain
any noise.

I was pleased to see in the July issue of QST that regardless of
whether ARRL and Lambda ARC have settled the issue of advertising, the
editorial department has no qualms about reporting LARC activities;
there is a two-page spread on the topic of DXpeditions LARC and/or its
members have participated in.

Many PUBLIC libraries will also appreciate them. With the current state of
budgets in many areas, libraries are not able to purchase books, maintain
subscriptions, or even stay open in some cases.
I heartily concur with Jeff...donate them to some steward who will see
that they are put to good use. (N.B. - Most radio clubs DO NOT fall into
this category; they usually have too many copies of back issues already.)

Here's something that may be different.
I've just started using a CW training program for my Atari ST.
Wanting a way to use headphones, I modified the program to output to MIDI !
Now I can listen to CW on my Korg M1 !!!!!!
I kinda like the rythym to hearing 'the end' played at 20wpm ;)

Just for interest's sake:
Here on Oahu we have two tunnels carved into a mountain range - these
are main routes between the South Shore (Honolulu) and the Windward
side. The state transportation department has a wideband `repeater'
that repeats the entire AM broadcast band within the tunnels - the
antenna wire runs the entire length of each tunnel.
Guess motorists, stuck in rush hour traffic, complained of poor
reception; I'd worry more about the noxious fumes.

Why not give London Underground a shout. Send the mail to any underground
station (BakerStreet has the centre). They basiacally have VHF/UHF equipment
and the antenna is a very long length of wire which just passes through the
tunnels.
That is how they seem to do it.
How they actually do it may be another thing. Just write and ask ;)

Maybe I'm wrong, but doesn't the FCC know who has passed element 1a and who hasn't?
Don't they also know if you are a grandfathered tech too? If they don't how would they
be able to cite you for out of band operation if they caught a no-code on 40 mtr cw?
I suspect that the FCC has all that in their records, so your CSCE is for the benefit of
interested parties other than the FCC. When they get around to issuing a renewal/modified
license for a TECH PLUS it will show TECH PLUS without the applicant furnishing proof.
No????
